An antique clear glass apothecary or chemist shop round bottle, complete with its original ground glass stopper. The bottle features a cylindrical body with a sloping shoulder leading to a short, narrow neck. Both the interior of the neck and the corresponding part of the stopper have been ground to create an airtight seal. The front of the bottle bears a paper label with a gilt border and a thin red inner border, printed with the text SPERM OIL in black sans-serif capital letters. Historically, sperm oil was derived from the head cavity of sperm whales and was used as a high-quality lubricant for fine machinery, watches, and lamps. The glass shows characteristic minor air bubbles from the manufacturing process. There is an embossed mark on the base of the bottle consisting of a pentagonal frame divided into three segments; the characters inside are not clearly legible but resemble B and C.
