An antique beam balance postal scale of British origin, dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1890-1910. The instrument features a polished brass mechanism mounted on a shaped mahogany wooden base with four circular inset recesses for weight storage. The rectangular brass letter pan is engraved with historical British postal rates, with the transcription: POSTAL RATES FOR LETTERS NOT EXCEEDING 4 oz 1 1/2 D. / ” 6 – 2 / ” 8 – 2 1/2. The scale is accompanied by a set of four graduated brass weights. These comprise a 4 oz weight, a 2 oz weight, a 1 oz weight, and a 1/2 oz weight. No maker’s marks are visible on the frame or base.
