A comprehensive antique ophthalmic trial lens set and associated optician equipment. The primary instrument is housed in a polished mahogany case with brass hinges and dual front latches, lined internally with royal purple velvet. The set contains an extensive collection of glass trial lenses mounted in metal rims with numbered tabs. Spherical concave lenses are set in white metal rims, while spherical convex lenses are in yellow metal rims. A central compartment holds cylindrical concave and convex lenses. The diopter strengths are indicated on white celluloid-style scales with graduations including 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, 2, 2.25, 2.50, 2.75, 3, 3.50, 4, 4.50, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.
The lot includes several original retail and component boxes. One brown cardboard box is printed for the Anglo-American Optical Co., 47, Hatton Garden, London, E.C. and 61, Nassau Street, New York, containing a small wooden-handled tool and a circular tin of assorted screws for German silver and gold filled frames. A second box is marked for T.B. Winter and Son, Ophthalmic Opticians, 21, Grey Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne, containing tissue-wrapped lenses. Additional accessories include a yellow translucent celluloid rule marked for Willesden Optical Works with scales for joints and datum lines, a business card for Mr. Charles Hadley of Bristol, a Maddox rod, a cross-cylinder, and various hand-held occluders.
