A mid-century modern novelty salt and pepper shaker set designed by Walter Bosse for Hertha Baller, Austria, circa 1950. The set comprises a stylized donkey figure carrying two wooden pannier-style shakers. The donkey is constructed from cast brass with a characteristic black patinated finish, designed to reveal the golden brass beneath on raised surfaces. The donkey holds two side-mounted rings which support the turned wooden shakers. One shaker is pierced with a single hole, while the other features a five-hole circular pattern. The shakers are of a rounded, bulbous form. This piece is representative of Bosse’s Black Golden line of whimsical animal miniatures.
