A vintage British maritime binnacle of cylindrical brass construction, designed for use on a lifeboat or small vessel. The unit comprises a main brass housing with a circular viewing aperture and a domed top fitted with a brass swing handle. Attached to the side is a rectangular brass lamp box with a hinged door, containing a removable metal oil burner with a circular wick holder and a ring pull handle. The lamp box is surmounted by a ventilation chimney with a hinged domed cap. The interior houses a liquid-filled compass suspended within a double-ring brass gimbal system. The underside of the compass bowl is finished in red paint. The compass card displays a traditional eight-point star design with grey and white segments. The inner gimbal ring is stamped with the characters B 3. The compass card includes cardinal and intercardinal direction markings for S, SW, W, NW, NE, E, and SE. The base features a wide mounting flange with pre-drilled holes for deck attachment.
