A Royal Doulton earthenware octagonal bowl from the Dickens Ware series. The interior is decorated with a transfer-printed and hand-painted scene titled The Fat Boy, depicting the character from Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. The figure is shown standing on a cobbled street in front of a coaching inn with a sign reading LONDON TO YORK COACH. The scene is presented against a graduated sunburst ground in shades of orange and yellow with a black-lined rim. The base carries the Royal Doulton Dickens-Ware circular backstamp with a portrait of Charles Dickens, the standard Royal Doulton lion and crown mark, the hand-painted pattern number D3827, and the printed title The Fat Boy. An impressed number 15 is visible to the left of the marks.
