Produced by Maw & Co Ltd of Stoke-on-Trent, this framed work comprises two vertically-stacked rectangular ceramic tiles decorated using the tubeline and majolica technique. The composition depicts two street musicians in 19th-century attire including bowler hats and tattered coats; the figure on the left plays a trumpet while the figure on the right plays a double bass with a bow. The design features raised clay outlines separating hand-applied translucent coloured glazes over a background with fine, intentional glaze crazing. The lower section includes a raised rectangular panel with the title STREET MUSICIANS. The work is housed in a dark-stained wooden frame with a gilded inner slip. The reverse retains the original gold foil manufacturer label which reads: TUBELINE & MAJOLICA HAND DECORATED TILES. This technique is used for decorating individual tiles or specially commissioned murals. Areas of different colours are separated by small raised seams of clay squeezed onto the tile like sugar icing. The tiles are then hand painted with coloured glazes.
