Buyer's Premium:

A set of three volumes by Richard Welford detailing the history of Newcastle and Gateshead from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The volumes are bound in grained leather, with the first two finished in maroon and the third in a lighter tan-brown. Each volume features gilt-stamped titles and the coat of arms of Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the front boards, accompanied by the motto Fortiter Defendit Triumphans. The spines are detailed with raised bands, gilt lettering, and decorative cross motifs. Included with the set is a contemporaneous softcover auction catalogue titled Catalogue of the Extensive Library of S. F. Longstaffe, Esq., of Norton. This catalogue, printed in 1894 by H. Wilson of Darlington for an auction held by J. A. Henderson at the Central Sale Rooms in Stockton-on-Tees, provides a direct provenance link to this set. Lot 336 within the catalogue specifically lists Welford’s History of Newcastle and Gateshead, confirming these books were part of the Longstaffe collection sold in September 1894.
