A solid sterling silver sauce boat and matching ladle. The sauce boat is designed in the George II style with a wavy scalloped rim and a flying scroll handle, supported by three cast scroll-shouldered feet ending in hoof terminals. The matching ladle features a plain curved handle and a rounded bowl. Both pieces are struck with the maker’s mark EV for Viner’s Ltd (Edward Viner). The sauce boat hallmarks include the Sheffield Assay Office crown, the lion passant standard mark for .925 sterling silver, and the date letter X for 1940. The ladle hallmarks include the Sheffield Assay Office crown, the lion passant standard mark, and the date letter W for 1939.
