This collection of antique pharmaceutical and apothecary equipment relates to a chemist formerly based in Monkseaton, Tyne and Wear.
The prescription ledger is a substantial half-leather bound volume titled Prescription Book in gilt lettering to the spine, featuring green cloth boards and leather corners. The interior contains numerous handwritten entries recording prescriptions, dosages, and patient names, with four-digit sequence numbers and dates spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The flyleaf and various pages bear a rectangular violet ink stamp for A. Leslie Joy, Chemist, Monkseaton.
The specialized weighing instrument is a Counting Ratio Balance, featuring a blue-painted cast metal Y-shaped frame mounted on a mahogany-finished wooden base with a black-painted lower plinth. It is equipped with brass beams and two suspended brass pans. The balance is accompanied by an assortment of seven weights, including six brass bell weights and one small lead or white metal weight, along with a clear plastic container.
The apothecary dispensing jar is crafted from clear glass with a ground glass bulbous stopper. It features an applied shield-shaped label with a gold and red border, inscribed Pulv: Jalapae, historically referring to powdered jalap root.
The mortar and pestle set consists of a heavy cream-glazed vitreous ceramic mortar with a distinct pouring spout, and a pestle comprising a ceramic grinding head and a turned wooden handle.
