A Northern Assurance Company cast iron fire mark, dated 1836. This rectangular, painted cast iron plaque features a central heraldic motif of a gold rampant lion on a red escutcheon with a gold border, surmounted by a gold crown, all in relief against a dark green background. The word ‘NORTHERN’ in contrasting relief lettering is positioned vertically on the right, and the date ‘1836’ in similar relief lettering is vertically on the left. It has a single mounting hole at the top edge.
Condition report:
Exhibits considerable paint loss, chipping, and surface wear, particularly on the relief elements, consistent with age and outdoor exposure. Structurally intact.
