An antique sterling silver hinged case, identified as a vesta case or match safe, dating to the Victorian period. The item is crafted from sterling silver, as confirmed by visible hallmarks that include a maker’s mark ‘S & BL, ‘ a crowned monarch’s head (duty mark), a rampant lion (sterling standard mark), an anchor (Birmingham city mark), and a Gothic style capital letter ‘M’ (date letter). The exterior is adorned with intricate engraved foliate and floral motifs on the curved lid and a portion of the body, bordered by vertical line patterns. The piece exhibits a small size, a suspension loop, and a distinct ridged striker base. No translatable language is present beyond the hallmarks.
