A Staffordshire earthenware surprise mug of cylindrical form featuring a flared base and a scroll-form handle with a moulded animal-head thumb rest. The exterior is decorated in relief with a tavern scene depicting figures in 18th-century attire, hand-painted in an underglaze polychrome palette of blue, green, ochre, and manganese. One side shows three seated figures, including one holding a walking stick. The interior contains a moulded and painted figure of a frog attached to the bottom and side wall, designed to be revealed as the liquid is consumed. The rim and base are accented with ochre-coloured glaze bands. The underside features a single circular blue-grey mark, which is not clearly legible.
