A Shelley Potteries Ltd. earthenware ashtray of circular, low-profile form, featuring two wide integral cigarette or cigar rests. The piece is decorated in the Harmony Ware style with a glossy, blended drip glaze. The decoration consists of concentric and radial bands in vibrant orange, cream, and mottled brown and grey tones, with a central orange pool to the interior well. The base bears a green printed factory mark featuring the word Shelley in script within a scrolled cartouche above the word ENGLAND in block capitals. A small hand-painted decorator’s mark in brown is also present. Produced in Longton, Staffordshire, England, during the Art Deco period, circa 1930s.
