A tabletop radio receiver manufactured by Defiant, a brand of the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS). This Model M.S.H. 555 A.C. features a dark brown molded bakelite or similar plastic cabinet with a contrasting cream-coloured plastic horizontal louvered front grille. The front panel includes a rectangular analog tuning dial protected by glass, displaying wavelength bands for Long (L), Medium (M), and Short (S) waves, alongside European station names such as the BBC Home, Light, and Third programmes. Four cream-coloured plastic control knobs are situated at the base, marked for Tone, Volume, Tuning, and band selection (LMS). The reverse of the unit features a perforated hardboard backplate with connection points for an aerial, earth, extension loudspeaker, and a record player pickup (P.U.). The front grille bears a small plastic plaque reading D E F I A N T. A paper label on the rear identifies the model as M.S.H. 555 A.C. for use with A.C. 195 – 255V. A small metal plate visible through a rear aperture is stamped with the serial number P 31345.
