A set of Poole Pottery transfer-printed earthenware plates featuring humorous illustrations by the artist Glen Baxter. Each circular plate has a flat well and a slightly raised rim. The central decoration consists of polychrome illustrations in Baxter signature comic-strip style, characterised by fine line work and a muted colour palette. These central scenes are enclosed within a wide yellow border containing a caption in black capital letters. The subjects depicted include a cowboy observing a large cheese wedge, two figures looking at a tiny object on a table, a man in a motorboat in a dark cavernous setting, a man wrestling an octopus, a man sitting on a tree branch while sawing through it, and a man holding a saw while appearing to have removed his own leg. The captions are: TEX SPENT MANY LONG HOURS CONTEMPLATING THE CAMEMBERT, IT WAS THE SMALLEST PIZZA THEY HAD EVER SEEN, HOW HE HATED SATURDAY MORNING SHOPPING, WALMSLEY WAS EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY WITH THE SEAFOOD SALAD, IT SEEMED TO MAKE PERFECT ECOLOGICAL SENSE, and UNCLE FRANK WOULD KEEP US AMUSED FOR MANY HOURS. Each plate is signed Glen Baxter within the lower portion of the central image. The underside of each plate features a black printed rectangular mark. The mark includes the text MADE IN ENGLAND above a circular dolphin emblem for Poole Pottery, followed by the inscription THIS LUXURY ITEM CREATED ESPECIALLY FOR POOLE POTTERY BY GLEN BAXTER. To the right of the text is an illustration of a man wearing a pith helmet and holding a flaming torch.
