A British industrial miner’s flame safety lamp, specifically a Type C.T.33A gas testing model. This piece was manufactured by The Protector Lamp & Lighting Co. Ltd. of Eccles, Manchester. The construction comprises a dark patinated steel bonnet and a machined brass cage and base assembly. The lamp is fitted with dual cylindrical glass lenses and a wrought iron carrying hook. A brass manufacturer’s plaque riveted to the bonnet reads: THE PROTECTOR LAMP & LIGHTING Co. Ltd., TYPE C.T.33A, APPROVED UNDER LIGHTING SHEDULE A33, Nº 601, MAKERS, ECCLES, MANCHESTER. The shoulder of the brass fuel vessel is stamped with the serial number 601, alongside hand-stamped characters reading L96 and F T T. This model was produced in accordance with British mining safety regulations established under the mid-20th century Coal Mines Acts.
