A British Pattern 1888 Mk I, Type II bayonet, a standard-issue sidearm designed for use with the .303 calibre Lee-Metford and early Lee-Enfield rifles. The bayonet features a straight, double-edged spear-point steel blade. The hilt is constructed with two-piece wooden grip scales secured to the tang by two brass rivets. It incorporates a steel crossguard with a muzzle ring and a small teardrop finial on the lower quillon. The steel pommel includes a T-O shaped attachment slot and a spring-loaded push-button release mechanism. One side of the ricasso is stamped with the maker’s mark 1 VINSON. LONDON. The opposing side of the ricasso features British military acceptance marks including a Broad Arrow symbol over the letters WD for War Department ownership, a crown symbol over the characters 35 W signifying a government inspector’s mark, and an X factory bend test proof mark.
