Buyer's Premium:

This is a comprehensive and rare satirical political “media kit” produced by Quartet Books Ltd in 1978, during Margaret Thatcher’s ascent within the Conservative Party. The collection is presented in a blue cardstock folder cleverly designed to resemble Thatcher’s signature handbag, titled Mrs Thatcher’s Bag. The kit contains a variety of satirical ephemera, most notably a 7-inch 45 RPM vinyl record manufactured by Lyntone Recordings Ltd (LYN 5544/45). The record features Maggie’s Song and Song of the Silent Majority, with lyrics and music by the celebrated jazz musician George Melly and John Chilton, performed by Jo Manning-Wilson accompanied by The Synco-Pinks. Also included is a 16-page satirical booklet titled MANAGING: A Guide to Modern Etiquette, humorously attributed to Margaret Hilda Th*tcher. The set is completed by an uncut The Colour-In Maggie Doll paper set with various outfits, a large full-colour cardstock caricature mask with the original elastic string, and a satirical black and white postcard titled Greetings from Barnet, Finchley. This assembly serves as a significant example of late 1970s British political satire and remains a sought-after item for collectors of political history and George Melly memorabilia.
