A French Model 1866 Chassepot yataghan sword bayonet with its original steel scabbard. The bayonet features a recurved steel blade of the yataghan pattern. The spine of the blade is engraved in cursive script with the inscription Mre Impale de Mutzig Juin 1868, identifying the maker as the Manufacture Impériale de Mutzig and the production date as June 1868. The hilt consists of a ribbed brass grip and a steel crossguard with a forward-curving quillon. A spring-loaded locking catch is integrated into the pommel for attachment to the Chassepot needle-fire rifle. The steel crossguard is stamped with the serial number H 40590 and shows small circular inspection poinçons on the quillon and ricasso. The tapered steel scabbard features a ball finial and a fixed frog stud. The scabbard throat is stamped with the serial number P 33045. As the numbers do not correspond with the hilt serial, this is a mismatched set.
