A set of eight vintage earthenware tiles produced by the British manufacturer H & R Johnson Ltd. Each tile is decorated with a hand-painted overglaze illustration in a whimsical, minimalist stick-figure style, strongly reminiscent of the ceramic works and drawings of Pablo Picasso, such as “La Ronde de la Jeunesse.” The vignettes depict various global and thematic subjects, including a drummer with colourful congas and palm trees, a guitarist in patterned trousers, a figure walking a dog, an Indian snake charmer with cobras, a bedtime scene with a figure carrying a candle up stairs, a tribal warrior with a decorated shield, a seated fisherman, and an American West cowboy riding through a desert landscape. The reverse of each tile is embossed with the factory mark: “H & R JOHNSON LTD” above a shield-shaped logo and “TRADE MARK.” Each tile is currently fitted with a removable, spring-tensioned wire plate hanger for wall mounting. Dimensions: 15.2 cm x 15.2 cm each.
