This oil painting on board is by the British artist John Falconar Slater (1857-1937). The scene depicts a rustic rural landscape featuring a thatched-roof cottage nestled behind a large, spreading tree. In the foreground, a female figure dressed in a red shawl and white cap is shown feeding a small flock of chickens. A windmill is faintly visible in the far distance on the horizon under a bright, overcast sky. The work is executed in a late 19th or early 20th-century impressionistic style, with expressive, textured brushwork and areas of heavy impasto particularly visible in the foliage and sky. The painting is signed J F Slater in the lower right corner. It is housed in a substantial period-style gilded frame with a deep, fluted and gadrooned moulding.
