A glazed white ceramic phrenology bust featuring black transfer-printed text and diagrams, based on the models created by Lorenzo Niles Fowler. The surface of the head is divided into numerous sections representing supposed mental faculties and character traits, such as Causality, Self-Esteem, Parental Love, and Language. The front of the plinth is transfer-printed with the text PHRENOLOGY BY L.N. FOWLER. One side features a decorative scrolled mark for L.N. FOWLER LUDGATE CIRCUS LONDON. The reverse of the base displays a printed testimonial from Fowler regarding his thirty years of study of crania and the correspondence between skull conformation and individual characteristics. The base and shoulder edges are decorated with a hand-painted blue border.
