This hand-carved hardwood sculpture features a stylised mask with an expressive, sorrowful countenance. The design is unique, with the face of the mask being supported by a single carved hand that curves around the side to form a pedestal base. The facial features include a deeply furrowed brow and a heavy, downturned mouth. The wood displays a rich, varied grain with a polished finish, transitioning from natural pale tones to darker stained areas. The verso of the mask is planed flat and includes a central hole with an attached loop of twine. No artist signatures or manufacturer marks are present. The material and style are characteristic of monkeypod wood carvings from the Philippines.
