A pair of stylized anthropomorphic busts, hand carved from a medium-toned wood. Each sculpture features an elongated head with a high, rounded headdress or hairstyle, embellished with inset dark metal upholstery-style studs. The facial features are minimalist, with heavy, closed eyelids and prominent, pouting lips. Two parallel incised horizontal lines are present on each cheek, suggestive of traditional scarification. The heads transition into long, cylindrical necks, each set with a single metal stud at the front, and are mounted onto integral rectangular wooden plinths. The style is influenced by the traditional art of the Mangbetu people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These pieces appear to be decorative objects produced in the mid-to-late 20th century. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible.
