Buyer's Premium:

This lot comprises two items: a mechanical mantel clock and a folding wooden chess set. The mantel clock is designed in a dome-top or humpback style with a case of dark stained wood, likely mahogany, featuring a moulded plinth base and four small bun feet. The silvered metal dial is inscribed with the retailer Grant & Son, South Shields in script and block capitals. It features black Arabic numerals, a rail-track minute ring, and two winding apertures. Internally, the clock houses a mechanical twin-train movement with a striking mechanism on two coiled wire gongs. The rear movement plate displays several hand-scratched jeweller service marks, including Z, E 1/84, and Jun. The clock is accompanied by a brass-faced pendulum and a brass T-bar winding key. The chess set consists of a folding wooden board that doubles as a storage case, constructed from a highly figured light-coloured wood, possibly olive wood, with an inlaid top of contrasting natural and ebonised squares. The interior is lined with red felt and contains a collection of turned wooden chess pieces in natural and ebonised finishes.
