This is a General Post Office (GPO) Model 312L rotary dial telephone, a classic mid-20th-century British design constructed from black Bakelite. The telephone features a pyramid-style body with a chrome-rimmed rotary dial containing alphanumeric markings and a central paper insert with instructions for emergency calls to fire, police, and ambulance. A chrome ‘Call Exchange’ button is located on the top of the casing. The base includes an integrated pull-out drawer for a directory. The handset is connected by a brown braided fabric cord and features a recessed mark on the handle reading 164 53. The telephone has been fitted with a later black plastic line cord terminated with a modern modular plug. Markings stamped on the base plate include 312L S53/3A and a boxed stamp reading G.P.O. / BATCH / SAMPLED / 5359.
