This lot features two items of Scottish interest. The first is a novelty whisky decanter produced for Rutherford and Co (Whisky Merchants) Ltd. The vessel is designed to resemble a leather-bound book titled The Spirit of Scotland and is finished with a maroon glaze and gilt accents. The spine features gilt lettering reading THE SPIRIT OF SCOTLAND and RUTHERFORD & CO (WHISKY MERCHANTS) LTD. MONTROSE · SCOTLAND. The front cover bears a shield-shaped transfer-printed label with EST. 1834, RUTHERFORD’S, SELECTED SCOTCH WHISKY, and RUTHERFORD & CO GLASGOW SCOTLAND. A black and gold seal depicting a lion rampant is applied to the upper corner. The second item is a traditional two-handled drinking bowl, or quaich, in the style of Wentworth Pewter. It features a polished dark bowl, possibly horn or synthetic resin, set within a cast metal frame. The wide metal rim and two flat, openwork handles are decorated with embossed Celtic knotwork and interlace patterns. A repetitive knot and cross motif encircles the exterior rim. A small circular maker’s mark is present on the underside of one handle but is not clearly legible.
