A 15ct gold commemorative medal awarded at the 1901 Royal National Eisteddfod held in Merthyr Tydfil. The shield-shaped pendant features a central lyre on the obverse, surrounded by the embossed text ROYAL NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD and MERTHYR TYDFIL AUG 6-9 1901. The reverse is intricately engraved for the CHIEF CHORAL COMPETITION and records the PRIZE £200 WON BY THE NORTH STAFFS DISTRICT CHORAL SOCIETY CONDUCTOR MR JAMES WHEWALL. The reverse is further embellished with a decorative Stafford knot above the central inscription. The piece is marked in multiple locations; both the body and the jump ring bear stamped characters 15 and .625, indicating 15 carat gold, alongside an additional indistinct hallmark.
