A pair of natural history bird studies by the artist B. Mattens, depicting a Blue Tit (Mésange bleue) and a Hoopoe (Huppe Fasciée). Each illustration is executed in gouache or watercolour with bodycolour on a textured, linen-grain surface, rendered in a detailed and naturalistic style. Both studies bear a stylized monogram comprising the letters M, A, and T. A gold foil label on the reverse is inscribed PEINT A LA MAIN / B. MATTENS / ST-JUST LUZAC / CHARENTE-MARITIME. The pair is displayed within a cream-coloured double-aperture mount and housed in a light oak-effect wooden frame.
