George R. Deakins (British, 1911-1982). A stylised winter landscape, oil on board. The composition features a small cabin with a snow-covered roof situated among tall, slender trees by a body of water. Distant mountains rise under a pale sky accented with a pink highlight. The artist has utilised a heavy impasto technique and palette knife application, resulting in thick, textured passages of white and blue paint to represent snow and bark. The painting is signed in black paint at the lower right corner DEAKINS with a stylised mark and dated 76. The work is housed in a substantial, ornate wooden frame comprising a gold-toned egg and dart outer moulding, a silvered secondary bevel, and a linen-textured inner slip with a gilded fillet. Affixed to the verso is an original paper label for the artist: GEORGE R. DEAKINS (UNITED SOCTY ARTISTS) CHAPEL HOUSE STUDIO 2 WEST STREET DUNSTER-SOMERSET TEL. DUNSTER 364.
