This highly textured mixed media landscape on board is the work of British artist George R. Deakins (1911-1982), a member of the United Society of Artists. The composition depicts a dense woodland scene, rendered in a heavily encrusted impasto style with grit or sand added to the medium to create a three-dimensional relief effect. The palette is dominated by cool blues, greys, and whites, accented by darker branching forms and small flecks of warmer tones. The work is signed and dated DEAKINS ’79 in thick red paint to the lower right. It is presented in an ornate, wide-profile gilt and silver-toned frame featuring an egg-and-dart decorative motif and a linen-covered inner slip. The verso bears a printed studio label for George R. Deakins, Chapel House Studio, Dunster, Somerset, alongside a partial biographical label describing the artist as self-taught, having begun his practice while serving on a British Cruiser during World War II.
