A solid sterling silver sugar sifter or berry spoon by James Deakin and Sons. The piece features a deep bowl in the form of a scalloped shell, intricately pierced with a series of linear slats and circular holes. The handle is tapered and terminates in a flared end decorated with parallel longitudinal ridges. The reverse of the handle is struck with a full set of British hallmarks. These include the crown for the Sheffield Assay Office, the lion passant indicating .925 sterling silver, the date letter L within a hexagonal cartouche for 1903, and the maker mark JD over and S within a shield for James Deakin and Sons.
