A large-scale watercolour on paper, with evidence of bodycolour or gouache highlights used to define the crests of the waves. The composition depicts a dramatic maritime scene with turbulent, white-capped waves crashing against dark, rocky outcrops. The sky is rendered with heavy, dark storm clouds using a cool palette of blues and greys. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner R. THOMPSON, LAMBERT,. It is presented in an ornate gilt wood and composition frame decorated with a repeating foliate pattern and a beaded inner border. The technique and subject matter are characteristic of the late 19th or early 20th-century British maritime school.
