A Victorian electro-plated Britannia metal (EPBM) tea kettle of squat, bulbous form, manufactured by James Dixon and Sons of Sheffield. The body is profusely decorated with engraved scrolling foliate designs, floral motifs, and diaper-work. A central cartouche to one side bears a presentation inscription reading: PRESENTED BY LOVING CHILDREN TO THEIR PARENTS ON THEIR SILVER WEDDING DAY 1883. The kettle features a curved swing handle with two ivory-coloured heat-insulating rings and is fitted with a hinged, domed lid surmounted by a cast finial in the form of a budding fruit on a leafy base. The piece rests on a low, stepped circular foot.
The underside of the base is stamped with manufacturer and material marks: a capital letter T, the trademark symbol of a trumpet with a banner, and the number 12. Below these are two rows of individual punches. The first row contains the characters E, P, a cross-like symbol, and S. The second row contains the letters B and M. The number 2812 is stamped at the bottom. These marks indicate the piece is electro-plated Britannia metal produced by James Dixon and Sons.
