An extensive historical collection of prepared glass microscope slides, each bearing a printed paper label for the London School of Tropical Medicine. The collection is housed in a rectangular stained wood cabinet featuring a hinged lid and a drop-down front panel that reveals ten shallow pull-out wooden trays. The cabinet is secured by two metal hook latches. The slides are hand-annotated in ink with detailed histological and parasitological information. Specimens identified include various tropical diseases such as malaria (subtertian, malarial brain, and malarial liver), yellow fever (liver), leprosy (skin, spleen, and nerve), anthrax (lung), sleeping sickness (brain), beri-beri (liver and nerve), and bacillary dysentery (intestine). Parasitological specimens include various helminths such as Cestoda (tapeworms including Taenia saginata and Hymenolepis nana), Trematoda (flukes including Fasciola hepatica and Clonorchis sinensis), Nematoda (Necator americanus and Ascaris lumbricoides), and Microfilaria (Filaria nocturna and Filaria perstans). The labels specify the tissue type, the infectious agent, and the staining techniques employed, such as Haematoxylin and Eosin (H+E), Gram, Leishmann, and Ziehl-Neelsen. Most slides are dated between May and June 1920, and several bear the initials J.G. The exterior of the cabinet lid retains remnants of old adhesive tape with the handwritten inscription Histology Mostly Tropical Medicine.
