An oil on canvas painting by the North East English artist John Falconar Slater (1857-1937). The work depicts a turbulent sea with waves crashing against a rocky shoreline in the foreground. The water is rendered with heavy impasto and textured brushwork in shades of green, blue, and white. In the distance, a steamship with a trail of smoke and a small boat with a red sail are visible on the horizon beneath a pale sky filled with seagulls. The painting is signed J F Slater in the lower-left corner. It is housed in an ornate gilt wood and gesso frame featuring foliate scrolling motifs at the corners and a wide inner slip. The support is a stretched canvas.
