This oil painting on canvas is a 19th-century British School copy of Sir Joshua Reynolds’ iconic portrait titled The Age of Innocence. The composition depicts a young girl in three-quarter profile, wearing a large reddish-pink bonnet tied with a bow and a simple cream-coloured dress with a high waist. The figure is set against a dark, tonally muted landscape background. The canvas was relined circa 1850 J Spender clearly stamp reading J-SPENDER and LINER on separate lines. This mark identifies the work of Joseph Spender, a prominent 19th-century London-based picture restorer and liner. The painting is executed with the fluid, blended brushwork and subtle tonal transitions characteristic of early 19th-century academic copies of 18th-century masterworks. No artist signature is visible on the face of the canvas.
