Buyer's Premium:

A detailed maritime scene executed in watercolour with gouache highlights on paper, attributed to John C Currie. The composition centres on the Cunard ocean liner RMS Mauretania, identifiable by the name inscribed on the black hull. The vessel is depicted in a busy harbour setting, possibly the Solent or Plymouth Sound, accompanied by several steam tugboats. One tugboat alongside the liner is also inscribed with the ship’s name. In the mid-ground, a large three-masted sailing ship of the line is visible, while the foreground features a small lugger-rigged sailboat with a lone figure. The artist has used gouache to pick out details such as the billowing smoke from the four red and black funnels and the white water at the bows of the smaller vessels. The work is signed in the lower right corner JOHN C. CURRIE and dated 91/. It is presented in a double mount with a gilt-lined inner border and housed behind glass in a black wooden frame with a gold-toned inner edge.
