A large Victorian edition of the collected works of John Bunyan, featuring The Pilgrim’s Progress and other writings, accompanied by a memoir by George Cheever, D.D. The volume was published by William Mackenzie, London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. It is bound in half dark leather, possibly calf, with dark brown cloth sides and a decorative gilt-tooled border between the materials. The spine is constructed with five raised bands, creating compartments heavily decorated with ornate gilt floral and foliate motifs, and includes a red leather title label lettered in gilt. The work is illustrated throughout with engravings, including an ornate engraved title page and a large, separate fold-out plate titled Bunyan’s Dream, which illustrates scenes from the narrative. The title page bears a handwritten ink notation 47 187 to the upper right corner.
