An antique cylindrical shop or pantry canister, constructed from toleware (painted tinplate), dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The canister features a domed, friction-fit lid and is finished in a dark green paint. Decorative gold-toned horizontal bands are situated near the top and bottom of the body. Centrally displayed on the front is a large serif-style numeral 9 in yellow-gold with a black drop-shadow. This type of numbered container was traditionally used by grocers or in large domestic kitchens for the bulk storage of goods such as tea, coffee, or spices. No maker marks or manufacturer stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
