An antique French scientific precision instrument manufactured by Etablissements Mabille, Paris. The piece is constructed with a tall, two-part cylindrical copper body. The upper section is seated within a slightly wider lower base section and is topped with a removable domed copper lid featuring a turned dark wooden finial. Affixed to the front of the body is a riveted brass identification plaque engraved with the following inscription: 427 Ets MABILLE, INSTRUMENTS DE PRECISION, 9, Rue Dupuis, 9 – PARIS. At the base, the instrument is fitted with a brass or bronze dispensing tap, operated by a contoured wooden handle. A vertical metal rod linkage connects the tap assembly to a bracket on the lower body. This object was likely designed for use as a rain gauge or a controlled dispensing vessel for meteorological or scientific measurements.
