A large apothecary or pharmaceutical mortar and pestle set. The mortar is of deep-welled form, constructed from heavy-duty grey-white vitrified ceramic, featuring a thick rim, a single pouring spout, and a low integral foot. The interior surface of the bowl is unglazed to provide the necessary friction for grinding. The matching pestle comprises a turned wooden handle with a rounded terminal, joined to a heavy ceramic grinding head with an unglazed base. The ceramic head of the pestle is impressed with the size numeral 10. This style of equipment was traditionally used in pharmacies for compounding medicines and in large domestic or commercial kitchens for food preparation.
