A complete surgical lumbar puncture apparatus manufactured by Mawson, Swan and Weddell of Newcastle. The set is centred around a large aspirating syringe featuring a clear glass barrel with a graduated scale from 5 to 60. The metal fittings, including a T-bar plunger handle and a three-way stopcock nozzle with dual output ports, are constructed from nickel-plated metal. The plunger mechanism is present and appears to be in working order. Included in the set is a group of five hollow needles and trocars of varying lengths and gauges, each finished with knurled metal hubs for attachment. These components are secured within the case by a red fabric retaining strap. The apparatus is housed in its original rectangular wooden case, which is finished in a dark, textured leatherette and lined with deep crimson velvet. A small cream-coloured plaque inset into the inner case frame is printed with the text MAWSON, SWAN and WEDDELL, NEWCASTLE. A paper label affixed to the interior lid reads Surgical Lumbar Puncture Apparatus / No. 17. / Nov. 71.
