A traditional Irish hardwood club, known as a shillelagh, featuring a distinctive transverse T-shaped hammer head. The piece is fashioned from a single piece of dense wood, likely blackthorn, utilising the natural junction where a branch meets the main stem to form the striking head. The entire object possesses a deep, heavy, blackened patina, characteristic of traditional soot-and-oil or lacquered finishes applied to seasoned wood. The circular end-faces of the mallet head have been worn or polished through use to reveal a warm, reddish-brown natural wood grain. The shaft follows a gentle natural curve and exhibits a textured, crusty surface consistent with age and traditional handling.
