A commemorative earthenware beaker produced by Maling Ware of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The piece is of a slightly tapered, cylindrical form and features a hand-enamelled scene over a transfer-printed outline. The decoration depicts two medieval figures on horseback against a backdrop of a fortified red castle and cityscape. The leading figure holds a banner bearing three lions passant, representing the Royal Arms of England. The upper rim is decorated with a bold Art Deco style geometric chevron border in black, iron red, and white. The reverse of the beaker features a printed heraldic shield containing the text THE HISTORICAL PAGEANT OF NEWCASTLE AND THE NORTH NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE JULY 20-25 1931. The base bears an incised triangle mark with a central dot and the pattern number 2035. Printed marks in black include the script Maling Ware above NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE and – ENGLAND. A small reddish-brown kiln mark or glaze inclusion is present near the centre of the base.
