A vintage brass miner’s safety lamp manufactured by the Hockley Lamp and Limelight Company, Birmingham. This item, often referred to as a Welsh miner’s lamp, features a cylindrical brass bonnet with an oval manufacturer’s nameplate riveted to the front. The nameplate is embossed around the border with LAMP & LIMELIGHT at the top and HOCKLEY COMPANY at the bottom. The central field is stamped with COLLIERY NO. 8721 and SERIAL NO. 13031. The lower section consists of a clear glass chimney protected by five vertical brass pillars. The top is finished with a riveted domed cap and a swivelling steel suspension hook with a black protective tip. The base serves as the fuel reservoir and contains the internal wick assembly.
