This collection of professional joiner’s and cabinet maker’s tools features a variety of implements characteristic of British manufacture from the Sheffield region. The group includes three wooden-bodied bench planes, comprising a long trying plane and shorter jack planes, constructed from hardwoods such as beech with steel irons and wooden wedges. A gouge blade within the set bears the stamped manufacturer’s mark of a shamrock symbol above the text Marples and Sons Sheffield. The assortment further contains a selection of chisels and gouges with various handle patterns including London and bolster styles. Several wooden handles are stamped with the owner’s mark N. Allen. Additional items include a wooden mortise gauge with the stem stamped G. Shield, a small brass-backed tenon or dovetail saw, a wooden-handled spokeshave, a metal try square, and a pair of steel spring calipers or dividers. The tools feature traditional construction with brass ferrules and fittings.
