A mid-20th-century British miner’s flame safety lamp manufactured by The Protector Lamp and Lighting Co. Ltd. of Eccles, Manchester. This Type SL model incorporates Prestwich’s patent internal igniter system and a magnetic locking mechanism. The lamp is constructed with a cylindrical steel bonnet featuring ventilation apertures, an iron suspension hook, and a brass lower assembly. The glass chimney is protected by five vertical brass pillars. A circular brass maker’s plate is riveted to the bonnet, embossed with the manufacturer’s details, the model type, and the inscription Approved Under Lighting Schedule B. The plate also features the stamped numbers 37 DD. The brass base rim is stamped with 2/16 and 2 C. The Pyrex glass cylinder is etched with the mark MFP within a crown border, denoting approval by the Ministry of Fuel and Power, alongside the numbers 58 1/4 and 59 1/2.
