A French Model 1874 Gras rifle bayonet and its matching steel scabbard. This edged weapon was designed for use with the 11mm Model 1874 Gras rifle. The bayonet features a T-section steel blade, often referred to as a T-back blade, tapering to a sharp point. The hilt is constructed with a steel crossguard featuring a forward-facing hooked quillon and an integrated muzzle ring. The handle is fitted with two-piece contoured walnut grips secured by iron rivets. The pommel is made of brass and houses a spring-loaded locking mechanism with a press-button. The spine of the blade is engraved in cursive script with the inscription Mre d Armes de St Etienne Mai 1877, indicating production at the Saint Etienne state arsenal in May 1877. The accompanying scabbard is made of tapered tubular steel and terminates in a small ball finial.
